Three Mile Island vs. Deepwater Horizon

I want everyone to watch these vintage news reports from Walter Cronkite and compare them to the reports we see today on the ecological tragedy currently out-of-control in the Gulf of Mexico.

This footage from 1979 featured a very well informed group of reporters that were asking very smart and relevant questions. The people they were asking questions of were real, honest-to-God nuclear scientists and engineers, speaking in front of a white board and doing so without a PR minder or some corporate attorney.

In disasters like these, the more you separate the viewing public from the scientists in the know, the more distrusting, skeptical and disengaged the viewing public becomes. Sometimes, it is easier to believe a purposefully misinformed lie than it is facts that have been filtered by the PR flacks and corporate attorneys.

Citizens were better informed in the 70s by the media than they are today.
